10 Seconds: Chima Anya
"Loving this 10 second series so many amazing songs I’ve discovered checking out from other people’s recommendations thank you! Here are some of mine:"
1. Daniel Caesar - Get You (1'08" - 1'18")
from Daniel Caesar - Freudian (2017)
"I think this dude is cancelled now, but I’ve never really been into parasocial relationships with artists. The drop at 1.08 grabs you and draws you deep into a dark abyss leaving you no option but to commit to the darkness and feel your way through the rest of the song. I’m a lyricist at heart so any song I gravitate to where I have NO idea what they are singing about is always impressive to me."
"Possibly the most majestic 10 seconds of audio ever recorded, both lyrically and musically. I been meaning to sample this for the longest time but I’m scared I won’t do it justice. If someone else wants to, go ahead but I’m gonna need a credit on that."
3. Lenny Williams - Because I Love You (3'19" - 3'29")
from Lenny Williams - Spark of Love (1978)
"This is why i can never be mad a Kanye for too long: he introduced me to this. As an overcomplicated lyricist, whenever i come across a simple lyric phrase that says so much with so little, I’m just in awe, and the transition here from pure emotion to the refractory state is masterful. The deeper I get into this list to more I’m thinking I should be gatekeeping this kind of information. Also side note - check out Lenny, he did a front porch not too long ago and KILLED IT… in his 80s!"
4. Nujabes and Shing02 - Luv(sic) (0’10” - 0’20”)
from Nujabes and Shing02 - Luv(Sic) Hexalogy (2010)
"This 10 seconds starts exactly at 10 seconds, so i had to include it. That squeek is like an old joint forcibly being moved. It just makes so much sense. If it doesn’t make your head nod, SEE A DOCTA. Perfect turntablist fodder."
5. Michael Jackson - Remember the Time (3’41” – 3’51”)
from Michael Jackson - Dangerous (1991)
"Never has there been a greater pay-off for remaining with a song till the end. The adlibs soar at the end of this track, they must have been improvised because the feeling is just too pure… DO YOU, DO …YOU, DO YOU? DO. YOU?"
6. Miles Davis - Blue in Green (1'49" - 1'59")
from Miles Davis - Kind of Blue (1959)
"The way piano (Bill Evans) comes in and announces its self with both an aching, unanswerable question and the most beautiful declaration is so compelling, for me it’s the hook that keeps the whole song going. Special shout out to the drums (Jimmy Cobb) too, occupying the tiniest yet most essential space."
7. Pete Rock and CL Smooth - T.R.O.Y. (0’14” – 0’24”)
from Pete Rock and CL Smooth - Mecca and the Soul Brother (1992)
"I still remember where I was when I first heard this sax. It must have been like 97 or there and about, listening to internet radio on a 56k modem as one of the few black kids in Kidlington. Rap was not the dominant cultural force it is now back then, I was definitely out on my own and this song instantly grabbed me and pulled me into a world of hip-hop from which I’ve never really escaped."
8. Chance The Rapper - Chain Smoker (1’26” - 1’36”)
from Chance The Rapper - Acid Rap (2013)
“This part right here, right now, right here, this part my shit.
I play this so loud in my car, I forget to park my whip”
"I mean we can all relate to that. Great song starts playing as you pull up to your destination, you can’t get out the car you gotta let it rock. The way this second verse opens and that synth comes in at the same time, pure joy."
