"This was a tough one for me, as often the thing I enjoy most in music is the form of it. How ideas evolve and transform over the course of a piece. But there are definitely a few examples here which are some of my favourite moments, that have inspired me over the years, and it was very fun to go back through and listen to them again."
1. Aphex Twin, Produk 29 [101] (4'26" - 4'36")
from Aphex Twin - Syro (2014)
"Just the harmony of this section, and how it’s sort of the climax of the piece, but the satisfaction is so short lived."
2. Bill Frisell - Rob Roy (4'11" - 4'21")
from The Bill Frisell Band - Where In The World? (1991)
"This is one of my favourite solos on record, made all the better because it comes out of nowhere. The first half of the tune is very quiet, acoustic and introspective and then suddenly Bill Frisell launches into this heavy electric guitar solo."
3. Robin Holcomb - Iowa Lands (4'05" - 4'15")
from Robin Holcomb - Rockabye (1992)
"I studied with Liam Noble when I was at Trinity and he put me on to Robin Holcomb. This song is sort of all about the futility of all human endeavour, how no matter what humans feel they conquer or achieve, it will all eventually be covered up by nature and forgotten. Which at this moment in time feels like an almost comforting idea."
4. Geri Allen - Shadow Series (3'57" - 4'07")
from Geri Allen - Twylight (1989)
"I was really into Craig Taborn when I was younger, and in interviews he often spoke about what an influence Geri Allen was on him. So, I started with this record and it totally blew my mind, this moment in particular has such a magical element to it and it’s so ahead of its time in a number of ways."
5. Micachu & The Shapes - Low Dogg (0'25" - 0'35")
from Micachu & The Shapes - Never (2012)
"This is such a simple riff that’s so strong, almost tacky but so perfect."
6. Duke Ellington - Northern Lights (The Queen's Suite) (2'48" - 2'58")
from Duke Ellington - The Ellington Suites ( The Queen's Suite recorded in 1959)
"I love Duke Ellington, and this is so ahead of its time. Absolutely as strong compositionally as anything Stravinsky would have written, but with the added bonus of grooving incredibly hard."
7. Death Grips - Get Got (0'06" - 0'16")
from Death Grips - The Money Store (2012)
"Seb Rochford introduced me to their music, and it was the first time I’d ever heard anything like this. This is the first track on the first album I heard of theirs and it really opened a door of possibilities."
8. Gyorgy Ligeti, Nonsense Madrigals: V (0'52" - 1'02")
"Ligeti is possibly my favourite composer, he’s had a huge influence on the music I make. This section is a perfect example of what I love in his music, the counterpoint, both rhythmically and harmonically, the idiosyncrasy and the invention."
9. Deerhoof - Bad Kids to the Front (1'30" - 1'40")
from Deerhoof - Breakup Song (2013)
"Simon Roth first played me their music and again it had a big impact, especially live, they’re one of the best bands I’ve ever seen live. The combination of sounds and dissonance with almost twee elements is so unique and these 10 seconds are a perfect little encapsulation of why I love their music."
10. Flying Lotus - Never Catch Me (2'45" - 2'55")
from Flying Lotus - You're Dead! (2014)
"It’s a classic in a way, but this drop when the bass drum comes in, and it’s so pushy, but feels so groovy. The production is amazing, and the effect is so euphoric."
