10 Seconds: Jonny Mansfield
1. Emmanuel Michael Band - I've Never Closed My Eyes (5'10" - 5'20")
“This whole song feels like being outside, in the sun. I love how it never fully goes full steam, there’s an ebb and flow to it I find so beautiful. I was lucky enough to play with Emmanuel recently and he brings such warmth and depth to everything they play on".
2. Baka Pygmies - Song for Gathering Mushrooms (0’22” - 0’32”)
from Baka – Cameroun - La Musique Des Pygmées Baka (1990)
"I’m obsessed with listening to this track and another track called “Song for Attracting Game”. I have no idea what’s going on in it."
3. Cécile McLorin Salvant & Sullivan Fortner - 2 (7'45" - 7'55")
from Cécile McLorin Salvant & Sullivan Fortner - Live - New Morning, Paris (2019)
“Sullivan has a whole orchestra at his disposal and Cecile. The way she sings ‘high’ gives me shivers every time."
4. Barry Harris Trio - The Way You Look Tonight (2'25" - 2'35")
from Barry Harris Trio – Chasin' The Bird (1962)
“Will Sach first played me this - we were talking about bass drum comping and the balance between bass and snare. Clifford Jarvis on this track sounds so good, I read that he moved to London in his later life, I’d love to chat with anyone that got to play with him in that time."
5. Harish Raghavan - Anjou (1'56" - 2'06")
from Harish Raghavan - Live at Shapeshifter Brooklyn (2018)
“I used to listen to this video multiple times a day. I loved the energy and flow. Watching it back now, it’s interesting how I was really into the intense energy of it. This video was my introduction to Joel, Immanuel, Micah and Jeremy who have remained some of my favourite musicians to listen to. I really like how Harish’s projects have always included younger musicians who I’m not yet familiar with, I really like his new album with Emmanuel Michael, Esteban Castro and Craig Weinrib."
6. Lewis Wright & Kit Downes - Tokyo '81 (2'05" - 2'15")
“I watch this video most times I go on youtube, I love it. So steeped in the language and feel of Gary Burton and Chick Corea but also its own thing completely. I had some really enjoyable lessons with Kit at college and I constantly looked to Lewis for inspiration and direction on the vibraphone."
7. Ray Barrttto - La Pelota (1'08" - 1'18")
from Ray Barretto – Que Viva La Musica (1972)
"Will Barry played me this, I listen to it in the car when it’s sunny."
8. Sonny Rollins - Without a Song (6’25” – 6’35”)
from Sonny Rollins - The Bridge (1962)
“So joyous! How the whole tune dances and bounces. Jim Hart showed me this album when I was studying with him, I now play my students this tune to demonstrate comping."
9.Sarah Vaughan - Embraceable You (2’02” - 2’12”)
from Sarah Vaughan with Clifford Brown (1955)
"Her variety of vibrato and the space created is magic."
10. John Coltrane & Johnny Hartman - My One and Only Love (2’28” - 2’38”)
from John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman (1963)
“I don’t have anything to say about this, I love it."
