"I’d like to start by saying that this has been a very challenging project. I think many can relate to the struggle of committing to eight favourite tracks, of how to follow a narrative, how to deal with the time limitations (10” per track) and to revisit moments that music has changed me radically. Although all these factors were initially making me feel anxious of the task ahead, I quickly realised that those were the same factors making this experiment so fun, introspective, inquisitive and at times also moving. suggest anyone reading this to try it! Indulge in a challenging but rewarding experiment of self discovery. It is hard to commit to a final choice since any given day this list could change as easily as the weather, nonetheless worth the effort.
I want to thank George for giving me this opportunity and I hope some of the tunes on this list will make someone smile 🙂"
1. Pleasure- Spread That Feeling (0'10" - 0'24")
from Pleasure- Special Things (1980)
"This groove is simply perfect. The clean and crispy sound of the drummer trips on the bass player, causing him to punch the first three notes, sublime. Simple, punchy, effective. Makes you get on your feet and boogie straight away. I love it."
2. Derrick Hodge - 19 (0'45" - 0'55")
from Derrick Hodge - Color of Noize (2020)
"The kick placement and not knowing what to expect from the drums really keeps me engaged and excited. The entrance of the organ on the 56th second is so subtle and pretty, adding a beautiful atmosphere the the piece."
3. Chassol - Birds pt1 (2'10" - 2'20")
from Chassol - Big Sun (2015)
"I admire the ability of the artist to emulate not only spoken word but also sounds like birds chirping, and allowing it to inspire a whole orchestration, layering beautiful harmonies to create a magical world, all of it dictated by nature. A true virtuoso."
4. Floating Points - Bias (2'30" - 2'45")
from Floating Points - Crush (2019)
"The drop. Nothing is better than a satisfying drop. A feeling of being pulled back, reversing time and mangling reality. Makes me think of a black hole."
5. Miles Davis Records the Score for Lift To The Scaffold (0'16" - 0'26")
from Miles Davis - Lift To The Scaffold OST (1958)
"Miles plays in such a laid back but surgically methodical way, completely improvising by feeling, and allowing the listeners to feel alongside him. A tune that spikes my imagination and transports me in a dimly lit, smoky, and neglected dive bar, where there air is dense with whiskey and heartbreak. Yet, surprisingly comforting."
6. Saba Kaapstad - Magic (2'41" - 2'51")
from Saba Kaapstad - Konke (2020)
The tribal singing makes me joyful and focused. The entrance of the bass feels bold and decisive, yet laid back. I love the chord sequence that the piano builds up to a beautiful marriage of tribal grooves and digital drums."
7. Isaac Hayes - Life's Mood (2'26" - 2'36")
from Isaac Hayes - Branded (1995)
"An ecstasy of strings, wah drenched guitars, groovy bass and delicate cymbals. A true pleasure to listen to and a all-time personal favourite."
8. Ashford & Simpson - Bourgie Bourgie (6'44" - The End)
"The strings are climbing a ladder to heaven, fully ascending. Majestic horns guiding the listener higher and higher."
9. Take 6 - Come Unto Me (0'49" - 0'59")
from Take 6 - So Much 2 Say (1990)
"The harmonies are truly exquisite, such a satisfying listen."
10. Asa-Chang & Junray - Hana (5'42" - 5'52")
from Asa-Chang & Junray - Hana 12" (2002)
"It’s impossible not to listen to all of the track. And to appreciate how beautifully the tablas playing and the spoken words are dancing together through sometimes ethereal, sometimes glitchy landscapes."
"I’d also like to add that putting this list together would have not been possible without the help and support of my partner Orlando (Stucchi Prinetti). He helped me writing it all whilst I was studying for an audition. Thanks sweetheart, and thank you George for asking me to take part in this 🤍"
